In a now viral video, the quick-thinking Staffordshire terrier led a police officer straight to his leash when the cop turned up to a house fire call.
The Aurora police and fire personnel had responded to a house fire report on September 11, where flames were visible from the property when they arrived.
Unsure if anyone was inside, investigators Michael Ely and Jacob Leonard forced entry to search the home.
Body camera footage revealed a beloved four-year-old dog to be home alone, appearing to the police officers through the thick smoke.
In a heart-warming moment, Oakley greeted his saviour and led him to his leash.
He then sat down patiently and waited for the officer to put his lead on before going outside.
Police Chief Matt Thomas said he was “proud of the way his officers handled the situation”.
“Their quick response made a real difference and it’s always rewarding when we can return a family member – even a four-legged one – safely to their loved ones,” he said.
Oakley’s family – who wished to remain anonymous – said they rescued him as a puppy from a local organisation called Players for Pits.
“He’s an athletic dog who loves to play and wrestle,” they said.
“He enjoys snuggling with us, snoring loudly as he sleeps, sunbathing and eating peanut butter.
“We are forever grateful to Mike at the Aurora Police Department for saving our sweet dog.”
There were no injuries reported from the house fire.
Investigators believe the blaze was sparked in the attic, but said the fire was considered not suspicious.
The homeowners and Oakley were advised to stay in alternative accommodation temporarily as a precaution.
Oakley has since been recognised as a certified good boy by popular online platform WeRateDogs.
In a post to Instagram that has garnered 451,880 likes, the page wrote “This is Oakley. Last Thursday he was home alone when a fire started in the attic”.
“Before Ely [the police officer] could grab Oakley, the pup urgently led the officer through the smoke-filled house, right to where his leash was hanging,” the post continued.
“14/10 for all,” the post rated Oakley highly.
