The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon just before 3pm.

Emergency services rushed to Cap Sant Pere beach in the popular resort of Cambrils south of Tarragona on Spain’s east coast.

Police and a lifeguard from a nearby hotel went to the man’s aid, before an ambulance arrived.

Sadly they were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another ambulance was called to assist the victim’s wife, who is understood to have been treated for a panic attack.

A yellow flag was up when the ordeal unfolded, signalling bathers could swim in the sea but should exercise caution.

It is believed the man went into cardiac arrest while he was in the water.

It remains unknown how he got back to the shoreline.

Authorities have yet to reveal his identity.

There is no lifeguard service at the beach outside of the high season, and the nearest lifeguards were at neighbouring Vilafortuny Beach.

Local Spanish media has reported the lifeguards were not alerted to the emergency, however, raced to the scene when they heard the sirens.

Tuesday’s tragic drowning was just a 15-minute drive from Llarga Beach in Salou, where two children drowned in late July.

Ameiya and Ricardo Junior Paris, 13 and 11, were pulled from the water on July 29 after being seen struggling in the water.

Their father Ricardo Senior, a construction worker, tried to save them and had to be rescued by emergency services.

They were on a family holiday with their mum and two other siblings at the time.

After the children were officially named, their cousin Holly Marquis-Johnson said: “The pain their family is feeling is unimaginable.”

In a tribute, she said of the Birmingham youngsters – known by their nicknames of Maya and Jobs – “Maya was intelligent, thoughtful, and growing into a strong young woman.

“Ricardo Junior was playful, kind, and always smiling. They brought so much love, laughter, and energy into the lives of everyone around them.

“Their absence has left an unbearable silence not just for their parents, but for their whole family, who were incredibly close and shared an unbreakable bond.”
