THIS is the moment a man cheats death by leaping into his car as a giant wild brown bear pounces on him.

Other locals were not so lucky, with an old lady killed and a 12-year-old boy mauled by the beast in the far-eastern Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

CCTV footage shows the enormous bear prowling behind a wall and catching sight of his target.

The huge predator theatrically leaps over the barrier and lunges, paws up, at the terrified man.

Thankfully, he is right next to unlocked car and manages to jump inside in the nick of time, leaving the bear furiously pounding on the windows.

It heavy paws left dents and scratches on the car, but it soon gave up and scampered off.

The same bear went on a rampage around the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, attacking and wounding residents.

It killed and scalped an 84-year-old woman on a sports field near a nursery school, close to the centre.

She was rushed to intensive care but tragically died of her wounds.

The bear also launched a terrifying attack on a boy, 12, as he desperately fled from its jaws.

Chasing the lad, the bear lunged and tore at his backpack.

He was thrown to the ground, hurting his head and knee, but had the incredibly nous to play dead – which saved his life.

The beast lumbered away and the child ran for help.

After the three attacks, the bear was tracked down and shot by wildlife officers, local officials said.

They say the bear was responsible for all three incidents.

Residents were wracked with “shock and fear” after the bear was allowed to reach the city centre.

The attacks came as the city – regional capital of Kamchatka region  with a 165,000 population – is under siege from brown bears.

At least two more wild animals were seen causing panic among residents in the city.

Hunting inspectors and police marksmen are now on duty in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The regional health ministry said: “The woman who was attacked by a bear on the morning of September 25 could not be saved.

“She sustained injuries incompatible with life.

“Despite the resuscitation efforts carried out, the patient passed away.

“The Ministry of Health of the Kamchatka Territory expresses sincere condolences to the family and friends of this resident of our region.”
