Y2K Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play

A24’s Y2K has finally been released, and here is every song that is featured in the film and when they play. Director Kyle Mooney is behind A24’s newest sci-fi comedy, with the film following a group of friends who have to survive a robot apocalypse after the Y2K computer bug turns out to be real. On top of being a post-apocalyptic comedy, Y2K also acts as a great throwback to the year 1999. The film is full of all kinds of pop culture references, with Y2K‘s soundtrack of late-90s music being one of the best parts of the film.

The music is core to the story of A24’s Y2K, with most of the songs in the film’s soundtrack having an in-universe story justification for appearing. The film features a lot of notable songs from some of the most popular music groups of the era, with the titles being so densely packed that some only appear for mere seconds. As viewers continue watching Y2K, they come to realize that the music is even more important than many once realized, with Y2K even featuring surprise musical cameos. When Every Song On The Y2K Soundtrack Plays In The Movie

“Praise You” by Fatboy Slim: The first song on the Y2K soundtrack is the 1998 British hit “Praise You” by Fatboy Slim. The song plays during the opening sequence of Y2K, with Eli choosing to listen to the song while browsing his computer and doing things like burning a CD, checking out his school website, and participating in AOL chatrooms. The song plays for a few more moments once this computer sequence is finished, introducing viewers to the world of Y2K.

“Flagpole Sitta” by Harvey Danger: The next song to appear on the Y2K soundtrack is the 1997 hit “Flagpole Sitta” by Harvey Danger. This song plays when the two main characters decide to go to the video rental store, known as Video MD. The song plays while they browse through the titles and talk to the video rental store employee, Garrett.

“I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain: Y2K‘s next song is “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, a 1998 rock song. This song plays while Eli is at the convenience store talking to some of his friends from school, including Rachel Zegler’s Laura. Laura and her friends decide to steal some alcohol from the store, with the song playing as Eli longingly watches her run away from the shop, introducing his love for her.

“Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba: “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba is one of the most popular songs to appear in Y2K, with the 1997 British song playing next. This song first plays when Eli and Danny are getting ready for the New Year’s Eve party, with it continuing throughout the montage. Later, the surviving characters sing it as they walk away from a porta potty which they fell down a hill in.

“93 ‘Til Infinity” by Souls of Mischief : The 1993 hip-hop song “93 ‘Til Infinity” by Souls of Mischief is the next song to play in Y2K. This is the first song that plays when Eli and Danny arrive to the New Year’s Eve party, with it continuing until it is cut off by another song.

“Switchblade 327” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra: The 1998 song “Switchblade 372” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra is the first song to play in the montage of different groups at the party.

“Freak on a Leash” by Korn: The 1998 song “Freak on a Leash” by Korn is the next song to play during the party montage.

“Da’ Dip” by Freaky Nasty: The 1997 song “Da’ Dip” by Freaky Nasty is the next song to play in the background of the New Year’s Eve party.

“Thong Song” by Sisqó: While at the New Year’s Eve party, Danny sings the 1998 hit “Thong Song” by Sisqó. A credits scene at the end of Y2K shows Danny singing this song again, this time alongside some robots.

“6 Underground” by Sneaker Pimp: The last song to play at the New Year’s Eve party is the 1996 song “6 Underground,” with it playing during the countdown to midnight.

“Back at One” by Brian McKnight: While fighting one of the robots, the robot attempts to distract the cast of Y2K by playing the 1999 song “Back at One” by Brian McKnight. The song continues playing as the group gets into a porta potty and slides down a hill.

“Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit: After meeting Limp Bizkit performer Fred Durst, the characters trash the Video MD as 2000’s “Break Stuff” plays.

“Faith” by George Michael: During the climax of the film, Fred Durst sings George Michael’s 1987 hit “Faith,” with him doing this at the human assimilation center in the school.

“Closing Time” by Semisonic: The 1998 song “Closing Time” by Semisonic plays as Y2K closes, with it playing on a portable music player in Eli’s car as they leave the cemetery.
