Nevertheless, Neeson’s story in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is definitely the most heartwrenching. It showcases the dark, exploitative nature of show business and how it sacrifices fine art and culture for the sake of success. As a result, this 2018 film successfully blends dark, witty comedy with strong pathos to present a Western tragedy unlike any other, making it a stand-out addition to both Neeson and the Coen Brothers’ résumés.

4 Run All Night (2015)

A Star-Studded, Father-Son Mob Thriller

Recently added to Netflix, Run All Night presents Neeson as Jimmy “The Gravedigger” Conlon, a retired hitman who must flee with his estranged son to save both of their lives after killing the son of his best friend, who happens to be a mob boss. This 2015 movie is another cinematic collaboration between Neeson and Jaume Collet-Serra, and it features a script written by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. Similar to Made In Italy, this action-heavy story revolves around Neeson’s character reconnecting with his adult son as the latter learns to love and accept him.

As it shows the mob descending on its two protagonists, the premise for this movie makes for a traditional but thrilling action movie. However, along with Neeson, this sprawling crime thriller features a noteworthy cast that includes Joel Kinnaman, Ed Harris, Common, Vincent D’Onofrio, Nick Nolte, and Boyd Holbrook. Run All Night also deserves a watch thanks to its killer musical score from acclaimed composer Tom Holkenborg, a.k.a. Junkie XL.

3 Cold Pursuit (2019)

A Dark, Wild Revenge Thriller In Frozen Colorado

Cold Pursuit presents Neeson as snowplower Nels Coxman, who seeks vengeance against a Denver drug cartel that kills his son by forcing him to overdose on heroin. This film is a remake of the 2014 Norwegian action film In Order of Disappearance. Nevertheless, Cold Pursuit has the original movie’s director, Hans Petter Moland, at the helm, keeping the franchise consistent while extending its reach to American audiences with a Hollywood icon like Neeson at the forefront.

Though this 2019 film was all but overlooked upon release, having made around $76 million on a $60 million budget, it still received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Action or Adventure Film. Similar to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Cold Pursuitcarries a distinctive brand of action and dark humor brought on by its creative but excessive violence. The poster of a car being impaled on a tree in the film was merely a taste of its bizarre and extreme action. Simply put, Cold Pursuit is what would happen if Quentin Tarantino had directed Fargo, making it a film that must be seen to be believed.

2 The Ice Road (2021)

A Tense, Icy Thriller Set In North Dakota

Written and directed by The Punisher filmmaker Jonathan Hensleigh, the Netflix-exclusive The Ice Road has Neeson play a truck driver who joins forces with co-stars Laurence Fishburne, Benjamin Walker, and Amber Midthunder to traverse snowy roads and frozen lakes to help rescue a team of workers trapped in a diamond mine. With its big rigs and adventure through a frozen wasteland, this 2021 film is essentially Mad Max but with ice and snow. In the end, The Ice Road stands out from the other vengeance-heavy action movies Neeson typically stars in.

Instead of taking on hordes of hitmen, The Ice Road shows Neeson taking on nature itself as he and his crew face the elements and try to stick together to save those who need them. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the success of Neeson’s film warranted the production of a sequel set on Mt. Everest, The Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky, so it would be a good idea to catch up on the story so far.

1 A Walk Among The Tombstones (2014)

A Neo-Noir Murder Mystery Set In The 1990s

Set in 1991, A Walk Among the Tombstones has Neeson playing iconic private investigator Matthew Scudder when he is hired to find those responsible for kidnapping and murdering a drug trafficker’s wife. Adapted from Lawrence Block’s 1992 crime novel of the same name, this 2014 film had been over a decade in the making, with Neeson filling in for the movie’s previous lead actor, Harrison Ford.

Featuring prominent actors like Dan Stevens, Boyd Holbrook, and David Harbour, this dark detective thriller shines as it takes its stars and puts them into a layered and suspenseful murder mystery in 1990s New York. This is especially the case thanks to its script written by writer/director Scott Frank, who penned classics like Logan and The Queen’s Gambit. Of the movies in the Liam Neeson filmography on Netflix, this might be the best one.
