Throughout the many years of the box office, there have been plenty of records broken and maintained, one of which is held by the 2017 action/thriller film Collide. The box office still hasn’t fully recovered since the 2020 pandemic, with the biggest box office year since then, 2023, still being a weaker showing than every year since 2006. However, even during the box office’s biggest days in the mid-late 2010s, Collide broke an unfortunate record that no project since has been unlucky enough to repeat.
Collide, starring Felicity Jones and Nicholas Hoult, was released in Germany initially in 2016, before its American release later in 2017, and unfortunately, neither release was able to accomplish much at the box office. While it is unlikely that anyone expected the movie to do as well as the biggest films at the time, 2017 was a huge year for the box office, and the film’s box office failings certainly would have come as a shock to those behind the project.
Collide Has The Biggest Second Weekend Drop Record At The Box Office
A Record It Definitely Doesn’t Want To Hold
Collide opened to $1.5 million during its US release, which isn’t anything extraordinary, but could have been built with solid word of mouth, as plenty of movies have slow starts, and then begin to ramp up as people hear more about them. However, that clearly didn’t happen, as Collide‘s second weekend arrived with a massive 88.5% drop, making only $173,620. At the time, and in the years since, despite plenty of blockbusters that have done terribly at the box office, no other film has achieved the same, making Collide sit in an unfortunate league of its own.
What is Nicholas Hoult’s best movie or TV series role?
Nicholas Hoult is one of the best working actors out there. It seems that every single role he takes on, he shines in. Even if a movie is not great, he is the bright spot. He knows how to choose the right roles for himself. It is nearly impossible to choose his best movie or television series role as he has had some truly incredible performances – Warm Bodies, X-Men: First Class, The Menu, and Renfield – just to name a few. If I was forced to make a selection, however, I would probably pick The Great. Maybe this is because we have a lot more time to spend with his character, Peter, and his relationship with Elle Fanning’s Catherine. One thing is for sure, I cannot wait for Nosferatu, as I am sure he is going to knock that role out of the park too.
There are many factors that went into the movie’s failings, but chief among them was the negative critical reception to the film, which currently holds a 23% critical score and a 35% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, while Collide had two well known actors starring in Nicholas Hoult, notably cast in the upcoming Nosferatu, and Felicity Jones, and beloved classic movie stars like Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley in supporting roles, none of these performers are going to draw people to a theater themselves; the project’s quality would have to convince people to go, which it clearly didn’t.
Collide’s Box Office Performance Made It A Massive Failure
The Film Couldn’t Make Much Of Its Budget Back
Collide‘s budget was reportedly around the $20 million mark, which, even based off its opening numbers, it was unlikely to make back. However, with its massive drop off in the following weeks, the film ended with a total box office gross of just $6.8 million, which is obviously far below what the film was made for, which doesn’t even account for marketing and distrubution costs. Even as a mid-budget film, Collide‘s box office failings were astronomical, earning it this unfortunate record.
