Golden Globes: Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ leads the nominations

Freshly crowned Best European Film at the European Film Awards this weekend, Jacques Audiard’s audacious musical Emilia Pérez, about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender affirming surgery to become a woman, leads the nominations for the 82nd Golden Globes.

The film scored 10 nods, including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director and Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for Karla Sofía Gascón – who made history earlier this year by becoming the first transgender performer to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. The film’s noms tower over other contenders like the musical Wicked, the papal thriller Conclave and the post-war epic The Brutalist.

Both Anora and The Substance, two of our favourite films this year, scored five nominations apiece.

Elsewhere, the Donald Trump origin drama The Apprentice also landed nominations for its two central performances by Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong. Stan is also nominated for Best Actor in the second acting category (Comedy or Musical) for his turn in A Different Man.

The president elect has called The Apprentice a “politically disgusting hatchet job” made by “human scum.” 

The nominations for Globes, which will take place on 5 January, were announced today by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut. The awards, which will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, mark the first major ceremony of next year’s season, which will culminate with the Oscars on 3 March.
