Top London restaurant with £93 steaks starts charging for napkins

A top London restaurant has started charging customers £1.50 to use napkins.

Marco Pierre White’s London Steakhouse has added the fee onto their bills ‘to cover the cost of table linen and napkins’.

The charges are shown on the steakhouse’s à la carte menu and diners also face a £10 fee for booking certain set menus more than 48 hours in advance.

The restaurant first opened on Liverpool Street in 2003 as Lanes Restaurant and Bar.

But by 2008 it had evolved into the steakhouse with the help of the celebrity chef.

Steaks are sold up to £93 at the restaurant, with customers also having the option of paying £200 for the ‘luxury dining experience’.

Consumer expert Jane Hawkes told the Telegraph: ‘It’s not at all fair to introduce an extra charge for something that should be included as standard.

‘If you go to a restaurant you expect to get a bill for the food and drink you have had, nothing more.’

People have taken to social media to express their surprise at the charge.

Junior wrote on X: ‘This is why restaurants are shutting down, they are stealing from customers.’

Neal Patrick added: ‘Next thing there will be charges for cutlery.’
