From launch, the Polestar 4 was announced with a full-surround camera-based SuperVision system. Three EyeQ6 processors, a front-facing imaging radar from Mobileye, and front-facing LiDAR from Luminar will give the EV high sensing and artificial intelligence capabilities. Using lasers, the LiDAR system is much more accurate than cameras, creating a detailed 3D map of the car’s surroundings.

Luminar has great faith in its LiDAR senses compared to some rivals’ more basic systems; last year, the company’s CEO, Austin Russell, said Tesla’s camera-only systems would not achieve full self-driving. At the time, the EX90 SUV was being launched with its own LiDAR sensors.

In the EX90, the LiDAR sensor can detect objects up to 820 feet away while also being able to spot objects in dimly lit environments. As Russell said at the time, LiDAR offers “centimeter-level precision,” something cameras alone can’t achieve.

This level of accuracy should also be on display in the Polestar 4.
