Pirates of Penzance has now has a warning sign due to “alcohol misuse” despite only referencing a single pour.

The English National Opera has caved into wokery as another London show receives a trigger warning.

Theatregoers eager to watch the classic Pirates of Penzance will be greeted at the door with both a warm welcome – and a warning sign for “alcohol misuse”.

It reads: “Please note this production contains references to alcohol misuse and mild violence.

“Please speak to a member of staff for more information.”

However, the warning has been put in place over someone pouring a glass of sherry, music critic Richard Bratby claims.

Writing on social media, Mr Bratby says: “I’ve been a venue manager.

“You have a duty of care to your public; there are many instances when content warnings are useful and necessary, and responsible venues are mindful of these things. But I must admit, I’d probably have let a single reference to sherry pass.

“The thing is, in this case the ‘alcohol misuse’ is simply pouring a glass of sherry. I guess that makes my late Grandmother George Best.”

The Victorian opera originally debuted in Devon – its first London showing was in April 1880. The performance then took off in New York where it has seen ongoing success.

The two-part show follows a pirate’s apprentice who falls in love with a major general’s daughter.

However, he encounters issues surrounding his apprenticeship graduation.

In response to the alcohol warning, classical music blogger, Norman Lebrecht, wrote that the management “needs to walk the plank”, as he labelled the opera company “hopeless”.

The new signage follows in the footsteps of other theatre companies placing trigger warnings on their shows too.

In April, those going to see ‘Out’ in Finsbury were warned of the “uncomfortable” sounds of the actors eating oranges while on stage.

The famous Globe Theatre also succumbed to gender activists who they were accused of “appeasing”.

Staff at the company were told to replace words such as “gentleman” with “someone” and to avoid using the word “guys”.
