Despite the fact that this show was a teen-centric drama, Gellar’s role in Wolf Pack was a significant source of hype leading up to its release. Though the series had a high number of viewers and an 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it received a measly 44% from critics, and following production delays, Paramount+ canceled Wolf Pack after just one season.

Wolf Pack should have been a successful outing for Gellar, especially since the show was made by Teen Wolf developer Jeff Davis. Unfortunately, the quality of the show’s characters, dialogue, special effects, and story failed to win over viewers. Even Gellar’s character felt underdeveloped and underutilized in the first season, costing Wolf Pack the chance to truly capitalize on what should’ve been their most outstanding attraction. Since this breakout role in the late ’90s, Gellar has starred in popular horror films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2. Having made a name for herself in several horror classics, a role in the dark and gory Dexter franchise was perfect for her.

Gellar’s role in Wolf Pack brought her back to her horror roots as it presented a supernatural teen drama involving werewolves similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, Gellar alone couldn’t salvage the series with the material she was given, failing to meet audiences’ expectations due to her legacy as Buffy. However, the popularity and acclaim of the ever-expanding Dexter universe make her role as Tanya Martin a much more fitting comeback.

While Wolf Pack should’ve been a compelling return to form for Gellar as a horror icon, Dexter: Original Sin makes up for the latter’s failures by giving her a prominent and well-rounded supporting role as Tanya Martin. This prequel also presents something unique for her by trading the supernatural, youth-centric elements of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Wolf Pack for a more adult, character-driven crime story. The latter show is much more fitting for Gellar, reflecting how she and her acting roles have matured in the decades since Buffy, marking the next big step in her career.
