The Met Office has issued another weather warning fresh off the back of Storm Debi – this time for heavy thunderstorms.

A yellow warning is in place for the whole of southern England which is set to be battered by torrential downpours and strong winds.

‘A band of squally, thundery rain is likely to push quickly east across the warning area through Tuesday morning,’ the Met Office said.

The alert is in place from 5am until noon on Tuesday.

People are being warned to expect ‘some damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes or strong and gusty winds’.

Affected areas include London, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

Forecasters also said thunderstorms could cause hazardous driving conditions with motorists likely to be affected by spray, standing water and even hail.

There could be widespread delays to travel, including buses, trains and planes.

‘Some short term loss of power and other services is likely,’ the Met Office added.

The weather front comes after Storm Debi lashed the UK with 70mph winds and caused severe flooding.

Amid amber weather warnings for the north-west of England, the fourth named storm of the season made its way across the Republic of Ireland on Monday morning.

Two severe ‘danger to life, status red’ warnings were in place for areas including Dublin at the peak of the storm.

Earlier this month, the nation was absolutely battered by Storm Ciarán, which left a trail of destruction in its wake.
