Universal has revealed the impressive sales on Jon M. Chu’s Wicked premium video-on-demand release. The movie-musical earned more than $70 million in the U.S. and Canada in its first week available to watch at home, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, which stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, generated more than $26 million on Dec. 31, its first day of premium VOD release. Both numbers mark the biggest first day and biggest first week for a Universal film for PVOD, surpassing previous record-holder The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $44 million in its first week.
The film is still available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime and Apple TV, respectively, for $29.99 or $19.99, respectively.
Over in the box office, Wicked is still going strong. As of Jan. 5, it has grossed $681.3 million worldwide in theaters since its release on Nov. 22, breezing through Mamma Mia!‘s $611.5 million to become the top-grossing film based on a Broadway musical.
The film had a big night at the 2025 Golden Globes earlier this month, where it took home the award for cinematic and box office achievement. Its sequel, Wicked: For Good, hits theaters Nov. 21, 2025.
