While some National League East and NL Central teams had strong offseasons, no other ball club was as active as the Los Angeles Dodgers, who reside in the NL West.
With spring training right around the corner, here’s where each team stands and their offseason grade as of mid-January:
Los Angeles Dodgers: A+
The Dodgers haven’t backed down after winning the World Series. They’ve somehow gotten even better, most recently adding Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki to a rotation that also gained Blake Snell earlier in the offseason.
One day after signing Sasaki, Los Angeles inked top free-agent reliever Tanner Scott to bolster their strong bullpen. The Dodgers stocked up on pitching as their depth has taken a significant hit over the last few years due to injuries.
L.A. re-signed Teoscar Hernandez following a tremendous first season with the club. They also poached Michael Conforto away from division rival San Francisco Giants. Korean second baseman Hyeseong Kim will join the Dodgers’ infield, with Gavin Lux now a Cincinnati Red. Los Angeles has a great chance to repeat as World Series champions in 2025.
Arizona Diamondbacks: B
Truthfully, the Diamondbacks didn’t have a particularly strong offseason, and they lost some significant names from their lineup, including Christian Walker and Joc Pederson.
But they did add former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes and traded for first baseman Josh Naylor, who’s coming off a career year with the Cleveland Guardians.
Naylor hit 31 home runs and had 108 RBI across 152 games. The 2024 All-Star will replace Walker at first base, and he has big shoes to fill, as he was a three-time Gold Glove Award winner.
San Francisco Giants: C+
Justin Verlander’s signing with San Francisco was an interesting development. Entering his age-42 season in 2025, it remains to be seen what the Giants will get out of him. However, Verlander still has plenty of gas in the tank.
The team’s biggest offseason splash was signing Willy Adames. He had a career-high 32 home runs and 112 RBI in 2024. After years of declining production, the Giants hope he can help fortify the shortstop position.
Colorado Rockies: D-
Remarkably, the Rockies receive a better grade than the Padres for their offseason moves. That said, they still aren’t that great.
Among their most notable moves are signing infielders Thairo Estrada, Kyle Farmer and catchers Jacob Stallings and Austin Nola.
San Diego Padres: F
Last season, the Padres were one win away from beating the Dodgers in the NLDS, but they failed to score in the final two games and were sent packing. Numerous pundits named them World Series favorites, but it was another disappointing conclusion to their season.
And unfortunately for fans, there isn’t much to look forward to in 2025. Their rivals in L.A. have only improved, signing their closer away from them, and fan-favorite shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is still a free agent.
