Drivers on the M25 faced traffic chaos after a van burst into flames, causing standstill traffic for commuters during rush hour.
The vehicle exploded into a huge fireball on the busy motorway at around 8am this morning (Thursday, November 16) between junctions 5 and 6 near Sevenoaks, Kent.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and crews extinguished the blaze using hose reel jets and compressed air foam, Kent Fire & Rescue Service confirmed.
The incident caused major delays along the M25 as traffic remained congested for six miles in both directions.
A National Highways spokesperson said drivers heading clockwise should expect delays of up to 60 minutes. Driving in the anti-clockwise direction, drivers are battling 45 minute delays.
Lanes one and two of the M25 will be closed throughout the day as emergency services work the scene. Lanes one, two, and there will be closed overnight to be resurfaced.
Crews remain at the scene to work on clearing the road, and the motorway has since reopened.
The incident sparked concern with the public taking to social media platform, X, to share their views. User @zmilkhan1 said: “Heartbreaking scenes on the M25. Wishing safety for all involved and gratitude for the emergency responders tackling this tragic incident.”
