Steven Spielberg is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, so when his sci-fi show was canceled after just one season, it came as somewhat of a shock. Spielberg has established himself as a talented storyteller who has been a driving force in creating movies like Jurassic Park, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and the Indiana Jones movies. And like any successful move maker, Spielberg progressed to a point in his career where he backed other strong stories to get made.
As an executive producer, Steven Spielberg was able to help create new and exciting shows and movies, but one of the most interesting projects he was working on was canceled after just one season. Terra Nova was an epic sci-fi show that saw a group of colonizers use advanced technology to travel back in time and inhabit a more nascent version of the planet. And throughout season 1, things get incredibly tense, ending the show with a huge cliffhanger that will likely never be resolved.
Steven Spielberg’s Terra Nova Had Huge Potential, But Was Canceled After One Season
Terra Nova Was A Totally Unique Sci-Fi Show
When it comes to sci-fi, the stories tend to consist of technology, space travel, aliens, and robots. Terra Nova included many of these details, but what set it apart from the more typical sci-fi shows and movies was the fact that the story was largely set in the past. Humans, having wasted Earth’s resources, have figured out how to travel through time. Thanks to this remarkable discovery, they choose, instead of flying into the depths of space to find a new home, to travel back to a period in Earth’s history long before humans populated the planet.

Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi show Terra Nova was set to be a hit with great graphics and a compelling premise. Sadly, it was canceled after one season.
This concept proved incredibly exciting, and the show had a lot of promise. Not to mention, the series starred talent like Jason O’Mara as the lead, Jim Shannon, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Taylor. O’Mara went on to play a prominent role in shows like Agents of SHIELD, and Lang is best known for his role as the primary villain in the Avatar movies, Miles Quaritch. The show reimagined what sci-fi could be, and it looked like it could be a hit.
Terra Nova Season 1’s Huge Cliffhanger Ending Was A Tantalizing Tease For Season 2
Terra Nova’s Ending Will Never Be Fully Resolved
However, after just 13 episodes, the series was canceled. This was especially disappointing for fans as the final episodes of the show left the Shannon’s and the others at Terra Nova in an incredibly precarious position. Dear friends proved to be traitors, the people who appeared to be the villains were revealed to be aligned with the heroes, and things got dire for the pilgrims who worked to create a new life in the ancient campgrounds of Terra Nova.
Some of the most explosive reveals include the fact that the gate connecting the past and future together was destroyed, isolating the people at Terra Nova in the past. But beyond that, the Shannon family teamed up with Taylor to resist the evil plans of Lucas, Taylor’s estranged son. This was an incredible set-up for Terra Nova season 2, and had the show been allowed to continue, it could have taken the story in incredible directions. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, and now the series remains permanently halted.
