Sturgeon was initially enjoying himself as he was seen buried waist-deep in a hole he had dug himself before disaster struck.
He had decided to try and dig as deep as possible but after some time he struck water as the hole quickly collapsed around him.
The major hole soon turned into a quicksand trap that caused his legs to sink and become stuck as he tried to regain his footing.
Pictures show how at one point poor Sturgeon was left sat 8ft below the surface of the beach completely covered in sand.
After some time, a heroic team of beachgoers heard the young Brit’s pleas for help and started to help rescue him.
Footage shows tourists, vendors and lifeguards desperately working to rescue the Brit.
Some were digging around him, while others handed him bits of wood and rope in an attempt to pull Sturgeon out – but nothing seemed to work.
According to witnesses, the rescue took over a whopping three hours.
During that time, the Brit became the centre of attention on the beach – and was even given a beer to stay hydrated eight feet under.
He was eventually pulled out by rescuers as onlookers applauded.
The terrifying incident happened on the famous Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In another video filmed at the airport before he flew home, 22-year-old airport worker Jensen said: “I’m Jensen from England and I’m the guy who got stuck in that hole.
“I was digging an eight foot hole and, basically what was going through my head [was], I thought I was going to die.
“But luckily I had good people to save me.
“Obrigado to the people of Rio that helped me out.”
