The viral judge, star-nicknamed as “nicest judge in the world,” has passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on August 22, 2025, at his home in Rhode Island. Frank was battling long with pancreatic cancer, which he publicly announced in December 2023.

Frank Caprio came from grounded beginnings; his father was an Italian immigrant who worked as a fruit peddler. Frank worked as a high school teacher during his academic years of pursuing law at Suffolk University Law School. 

According to Wikipedia, Frank Caprio’s first clip went viral in 2017, crossing 15 million views. But something that made people euphoric about him was his kindness and empathy.

In an interview, Caprio said, My father, an Italian immigrant, always taught me to be respectful, understanding, kind, and compassionate with people, and I am happy the message resonated with the world.” 

Judge Frank Caprio’s Lesser-Known Facts

The majority is aware of Caprio’s fun moments from Caught In Providence. But one of the least-known moments showcasing his kindness and his ability to deliver justice with empathy was when he encountered a man in the courtroom who was struggling to feed his children and couldn’t afford to pay the fine. Judge Caprio personally paid the fine on his behalf.

In the interview with Mel Robbins, he said, “You can change the course of someone’s life by placing a hand on their shoulders, telling them you love them, that you believe in them…” 

Judge Caprio wasn’t appointed by any government or president; he was elected by the Rhode Island citizens and later appointed as the Chief Judge by his fellow judges in 1985, holding the position for 38 years. 

Judge Caprio was also a Boston Red Sox fan and threw a ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park in 2019, reminiscing about his father taking him to Fenway Park as a kid. 

Also, he stood lifelong for the importance of education and funded scholarships for underprivileged children via his Antonio ‘Tup’ Caprio Scholarship Fund.

He loved Italian cuisine and co-owned a restaurant in Rhode Island with his friends. And secretly enjoyed Opera music and fishing. 

When invited as a keynote speaker at the opening of 1the 12th edition of the International Government Communication Forum (IGCF 2023), he mentioned, “I am here, 11,000 km away from my home only because of the message of kindness and compassion.”

It’s always said that ‘if you can be anything in this world, be kind,’ and Judge Frank Caprio lived up to it. His passion for his profession and empathetic attitude etched his name forever in people’s hearts all over the world. 

His last words to people on his official social media handle were,If it’s not too much, you remember me in your prayers, I’m a great believer in prayers.”
