The Brit is said to have nearly crashed into Kitinan Pantarak, a 40-year-old local, before sparking a heated row on the street.

The Thai man is alleged to have then pulled out a gun and sprayed the Brit down, injuring him in the arm.

In a strange twist of fortune, the gunman then picked up the Brit and rushed him to hospital before medics treated him urgently.

But the Thai man left the hospital before cops arrived.

They raced to track him down and eventually arrested Kitinan at his home.

Police said that the Brit is now safe and out of danger – but are probing the tourist as he was overstaying in the country.

Police Colonel Phasawin Kaewtai revealed the gunman has been remanded in custody.

The officer said: “We received a report that a British man had been shot with a firearm and was injured.

“Officers and investigators went to the scene and found that the British man had already been taken to Pai Hospital.

“He had sustained an injury to his arm. He was staying at a rented room, not as a guest at the Yoma Hotel.”

He added: “From security camera footage, it was clear there was an altercation between the suspect and the tourist.”

Police also revealed that the suspect claimed to have met the British man three weeks ago.

He said the tourist actually owed him over £50 for money he had borrowed from his cannabis shop.

Kaewtai added: “The suspect said that he had known the British after selling cannabis to him.

“They had not arranged to meet and nearly collided on their motorcycles.”

Police also said the suspect claimed that the Brit punched him first.

He then allegedly fired a gun at the tourist, injuring him, and afterwards personally took him to Pai Hospital.

Cops confirmed that security camera footage showed the suspect bringing the victim to the hospital, and added that ambulances or police were not at the scene.

The Thai man has been charged with attempted murder – but police detailed how the case may simmer down going forward

The officer said: “When I went to visit the foreigner in the hospital, he told me it was an accident.

“He did not seem to want to pursue the matter, as if he acknowledged his own part in what happened and did not want to escalate it.”

And they also said that the Brit should have left Thailand on August 22 according to his visa – with the shooting unfolding on August 26.

The policeman said of the Brit: “His injuries are not serious. When I visited yesterday, he was walking around with an IV drip, even going outside to smoke a cigarette, showing no signs of remorse or concern.”
