THIS is the terrifying moment Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner tried to confront the prosecutor who insists he kidnapped and killed her.
The paedophile, 48, travelled for hours to find Hans Christian Wolters – who has publicly declared he has evidence that would land Brueckner back behind bars.
The suspect, Christian Brueckner, reportedly travelled hours to confront the prosecutor
He said the prosecutor refused to meet him
Brueckner was previously in jail for raping a 72-year-old American woman
Brueckner reportedly travelled to Wolters’ office in Braunschweig, near Hanover to demand he help him get his life back.
Wolters has long insisted the convicted rapist is responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance and killing.
In an interview with Germany’s Stern magazine, Brueckner’s lawyer Dr Fulscher said: “The Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office has fuelled this media campaign of prejudgment.
“It has told the public that it is certain it has the right person. Without presenting sufficient evidence or even allowing my client to inspect the files.
“I find this highly questionable from a constitutional point of view. In my opinion, the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office has made rehabilitation impossible.”
The prosecutor, however, received a tip about his visit and refused to speak to him.
Brueckner later told Sky News: “The prosecutor refused to meet me, but I told his representative I wanted his help to get my life back.
“I’m being hounded by the media, and it’s his fault. I want him to take responsibility.
“I was told there was nothing they could do to help. I had been convicted and released, and I wasn’t their responsibility.”
Criminal past
Brueckner was in jail for raping a 72-year-old American woman in 2005 in Praia da Luz — the resort from which three-year-old Madeleine disappeared two years later.
He should have stayed locked up for another four months — but a former German FBI officer who had previously investigated him settled outstanding court fines over fears his human rights were being infringed.
However Wolters previously said: “In prison, he has not undergone any therapy. We therefore estimate that the risk of re-offending is high.
“This worries us. At the time of Madeleine’s disappearance in 2007, Bruckner was driving in the south of Portugal on board his motorhome.
“When the girl vanishes, his cell phone rings in the area.
“In five years of investigation, we have not found anything that can vindicate him.
“No alibi. On the contrary, we have accumulated incriminating evidence.
“To us, it is obvious that it is him. There are no other suspects, and there never have been.
“But without sufficient evidence, we cannot prevent the main suspect from being released.”
Overwhelming evidence
An exclusive Sun investigation aired as a Channel 4 documentary in May revealed cops are in possession of images that help contribute to their understanding Madeleine is dead.
They also seized stories where Brueckner daydreams about snatching and abusing girls.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, investigators have been reluctant to charge over the case, fearing the lack of forensic proof would harm their chances.
They were also spooked by a court last year clearing Brueckner of other rape and sex assaults — an acquittal which put him on the path to freedom.

Since it became clear that Brueckner would be released, Met cops significantly stepped up their activity on the case.
British detectives secretly flew to Portugal to re-interview as witnesses a German couple he once stayed with.
It also emerged that investigators take seriously the prospect Madeleine was snatched to order by human traffickers, potentially with links to Belgium.
Brueckner’s lawyers continue to protest his innocence on all matters.
Leering at kids
Brueckner was handed a two-bed flat — close to a shelter for vulnerable girls — by a local council after he was released from prison on September 17.
But after his address and pictures of his home were posted online by panicked parents in the northern German town, three police vans and 15 officers quickly came to take him away.
Brueckner had been photographed creepily looking out of a window overlooking an area where children often play.
Another picture shows a young blonde girl swinging on goalposts just a few feet from the pervert’s front door.
Frowning cops carried the fiend’s belongings from the ground-floor apartment before Brueckner strode out moments later.
As officers led him away, he was asked by The Sun on Sunday: “Christian, can you tell us what happened to Madeleine McCann?”

How we revealed probe on evil perv
THE Sun has led the way in covering the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
In June 2020, German investigators named him as Christian B, and revealed their belief she was dead.
A month later we revealed fears over Brueckner’s allotment house with a cellar he was building.
That September The Sun tracked key witness Helge B down in Corsica, who claimed the sex offender told him: “She didn’t scream.”
In October 2022, The Sun revealed how Brueckner had been charged with a sex assault on a girl of ten near Praia da Luz days before Madeleine vanished.
In September 2024 The Sun printed claims Brueckner told an ex-cell mate he had taken a child in Portugal and begged him to burn his lair.
This May, The Sun revealed evidence against Brueckner unearthed from police files after an investigation into him — including child abuse messages.
The Sun revealed in June Brueckner bragged that cops would never pin the case on him.
Last week we revealed a cop investigating Brueckner paid for his early release because she feared for his human rights.
