The news has been met with some opposition, reports the Associated Press, with more than 100 business and labor groups sending more than 10,000 letters to state legislators about the ban. According to Ray Cantor, an official with the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, these groups are pleading with legislators to step in and stop a rule that will dictate “what type of car residents can drive, and in some cases, if they can afford to drive,” he said.
Cantor added that the ban on new gasoline-powered vehicles doesn’t consider essential things, such as cost and grid capacity. “It ignores consumer choice. It doesn’t take New Jersey residents into account, especially low- and moderate-income families.”
According to the official site of the State of New Jersey, electric vehicle sales are on the rise. There are now more than 123,000 EVs in the state. Since December 2022, sales have increased by 50%. However, total EV sales only represent 12% of new car sales in the state.
