Mon. Dec 1st, 2025

One of the best recent Korean dramas of 2025, Genie, Make a Wish. It premiered on the 3rd of October, 2025. It has become the most talked-about series in the romantic fantasy genre. The series is about fictional love and magic. The show received around 8 million plus views in a week. On its release, the number of views has reached 4 million in 3 days.

Fans loved the comedy and the romantic plot that took place at the same time. The story was also unique from that of most of the K-dramas trending today. Now, fans want to know whether there will be a second season or not. If yes, when to expect the release date of Genie, Make a Wish Season 2? Here are all the details related to the K-drama and its upcoming release.

What Is ‘Genie, Make a Wish’ About? Spoiler Ahead

The series is about the love and sacrifice story of a genie and a girl without emotions. The female lead character, Ki Ka Young, is played by Bae Suzy. The story started with Ka Young living a simple life with her grandmother. She lacks emotions and rarely feels deep emotions. Her life changed when she accidentally discovered a magical lamp and awakened the genie, Iblis. The main male lead is played by Kim Woo-Bin.

The story took a lift with the entry of this mischievous and older than the world spirit, Iblis, who has been trapped in the lamp for over a thousand years. His main motive is to prove that humans are selfish and will betray one day. His belief is based on his experience, which was definitely not good.

In the 3rd episode, they felt a strange connection to their past life. The story continues with the plot of how the genie got imprisoned, where the face of betrayal matches that of Ka Young.

The story further shows the growing connection between the two. They eventually started falling for each other, which brought more consequences and problems.

At the end of the story, the genie is left with 2 options: either he could continue his mission of punishing the humans or save Ka Young. He chose the second option and vanished. The last and third wish was pending, and instead of making a wish for herself, she asked for Ilbis to get free from this genie life and get to live like a normal human being.

At the end, Iblis is seen returning as a human being and walking toward Ka Young, and the series ended, which has left the fans wanting more seasons and see what will happen next.

The Main Cast of the Series

The show features a strong ensemble cast, including:

Kim Woo-bin as Iblis (Genie)

Bae Suzy as Ki Ka-young

Kim Me-kyung as Oh Pan-geum, Ka-young’s grandmother

Noh Sang-hyun as Ejllael

Ko Kyu-phil as Sade

Lee Joo-young as Choi Min-ji

Woo Hyun-jin as Irem

Ahn Eun-jin as Lee Mi-ju

The love and teasing chemistry of Woo-bin and Suzy is praised by many viewers. The high voltage drama and playful story have struck viewers on television. I personally love the show, as it gives a mix of all the emotions from romance to sacrifice at the same time.

Release of Genie: Make a Wish Season 2 & What to Expect?

As of now, Netflix hasn’t announced any update for season 2. But according to where the story ended, leaving people behind them cliffhanging, it should be re-released.

The new season can continue with a new love story of Iblis and Ka Young, and how Iblis, as a human, will survive after so many years living the life of a genie. More in the season can be the challenges he will face as a human. However, currently no update is available, so be patient as the release is not possible by 2027.

Controversy Surrounding the Show

The series has faced some severe allegations, too. Most of the allegations were due to the character of Genie, Ilbis, who is shown with a muslim belief and represented evil.

Some of the viewers said that the show has misused religious concepts by making the character of Iblis romantic. The allegation sparked when hashtags like #BoycottGenieMakeAWish and #CancelNetflix started trending online.

Some of the viewers also defended the series by saying that we should keep the fictional and real worlds apart from each other. The freedom of writing allows writers to get inspiration from traditional stories. K-drama fans supported the show and suggested enjoying the show as a fictional story, not as a real story.

Reception and Ratings

The series has received quite a good review from the viewers. The review varies from one platform to another. According to IMDb, the show got a 6.5/10 rating from more than 8.5k viewers. Rotten Tomatoes has given it a rating of 3.7 out of 5.

The show has received a tremendous viewership with around 8 million viewers in a week. With 50 million+ viewing hours.

Themes and Highlights

The show explores several key themes:

Love that leads to sacrifice. Both leads made a huge sacrifice for each other, giving a lesson in prioritizing your loved ones.

It has shown how human emotions can be both greedy and loving.

It has given the experience of fantasy and faith. And the controversy shows that we should not mix the two.

The show looks unrealistic, but it keeps you hooked through all the episodes.
