When the next-gen Bolt arrives on the market in 2025, it will be underpinned by GM’s Ultium architecture rather than the existing platform that debuted in 2016. This will be the first North America Ultium vehicle to use LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) batteries rather than lithium-ion, helping to lower costs and speed up the production timeline.

This move should allow the Bolt to avoid production delays that have plagued other GM EVs. Barra admitted at the event that GM has not executed well on building battery modules, but says the transition to EVs is akin to “the first turn of the first lap of a multi-lap race.”

“We’ll continue to make progress. When you’re making this kind of transformation, I don’t think anybody thought it was going to be just a straight line up. It’s going to have ups and downs. But that’s the industry that we’re in,” she added.
