Typically, the first of the month sees the largest number of titles being added to Netflix, and 2024 kicks off similarly with 40 new additions. Among the many movies and series being added on January 1 are a few noteworthy franchises. While fans wait to see what the future will have in store for John Wick following the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, Netflix users can at least revisit the series with its first three movies. The first three movies in the Jurassic Park series will also be added with Steven Spielberg’s brilliant blockbuster with the first movie, the underrated second movie, and the disappointing yet still fun third movie. Musical fans will also be able to enjoy both Mamma Mia! movies coming to Netflix.

Among the other titles arriving on Netflix on January 1 are several Oscar-winning movies like the visually stunning survival thriller Gravity, the crime thriller Training Day with Denzel Washington’s towering performance, and the Best Picture winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. In terms of the series that will be available on January 1, there are several new seasons of the children’s series Peppa Pig, the first two seasons of The Wonder Years reboot, season 33 of Survivor, the dramedy Loudermilk, and the new series Fool Me Once.

Also premiering is the Australian series Boy Swallows Universe which focuses on a young boy whose family is torn apart by a local drug lord and sets out to make things right through redemption and retribution.

Finally, a harrowing new Spanish movie from director J.A. Bayona arrives with Society of Snow. It tells the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team whose flight went down in the Andes, forcing the survivors to take drastic measures in order to stay alive in the brutal elements.

Dan Levy’s Directorial Debut

Perhaps the most highly anticipated new Netflix movie arrives on January 5. After making Emmy history as creator and star of the beloved and acclaimed Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy makes his directorial debut with Good Grief, in which he also wrote and stars. Levy plays a recent widower who attempts to get over the loss of his husband by going on a Paris trip with his two best friends. While Schitt’s Creek had some serious moments to be sure, it will be interesting to see what Levy does with such a dramatic tone. It will be joined by the second part of the Korean historical action series Gyeongseong Creature.

Sean Baker’s Acclaimed Coming-Of-Age Movie

January 6 will see the arrival of the Oscar-nominated drama The Florida Project. Set over the course of a summer at a small motel situated next to Disney World and follows a young girl on a series of mischievous adventures as she stays at the motel with her struggling single mother. Willem Dafoe earned an Oscar nomination for his moving performance as the kind-hearted motel owner who looks out for his loyal tenants. It is a funny, touching, and insightful movie about childhood that beautifully uses its unique setting.
