Another deflating loss. A determined, doomed Pascal Siakam effort. A long-overdue roster shake-up. Sad Scottie. 2023 ended just about as appropriately as possible for the Raptors.

‘Topes lose. 129-127. Detroit’s 28-game losing streak is finally over.
35/5/4 for Siakam, 30 and 9 for Schröder. Cunningham had 30 and 12, Duren 18 and 17. Congrats to real Pistons fans. – 8:37 PM

Lol. An opposing teams hasn’t missed a clutch shot against Detroit in two months.

7:51 left to play.
Big pair of free throws form Duren. – 7:59 PM

Siakam is starting on the bench to begin 4Q. He went bonkers in the third.
Now if the Pistons stop helping off GTJ, they might build a little cushion here. – 7:52 PM

90-86 Pistons in a game that has featured 12 lead changes and 11 ties through three quarters. Siakam had 20 of his game-high 28 points in the third quarter. Schroder has 21 and six so far. Not Barnes night (3/12) as of yet, but Toronto will need some burst in the fourth. – 7:52 PM
Josh Lewenberg @JLew1050
Guess who doesn’t feel like losing to a historically bad team today? Pascal Siakam. He just dropped 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting during an extraordinary 3rd quarter. Raptors shot 16-for-20 in the Q but only shaved 4 points off the Detroit lead, which is 4 going into the 4th. – 7:51 PM

End of the 3rd quarter: #Pistons 90, #Raptors 86.
Knox: 17 pts (7-12 FG, 3-7 3PT)
Cunningham: 16 pts, 11 asts (8-8 FT)
Burks: 16 pts (4-5 FG, 3-3 3PT, 5-5 FT)
Pascal Siakam: 28 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts (11-18 FG) – 7:50 PM

Pistons by 4 after 3; Siakam’s 20 point quarter was truly a gem – 7:50 PM
Eric Koreen @ekoreen
Pistons lead 90-86 after 3. Siakam scored 20 on 8-for-9 shooting that quarter. It was dominant.
Alas: everyone else. – 7:50 PM

They’re gonna announce the Siakam extension post-game, right? – 7:44 PM

Knox got Siakam off balance with that jab step, and he confidently drained a 3 to give the Pistons a 47-37 lead over the Raptors with 3:02 left in the first half. – 7:02 PM
James Edwards III @JLEdwardsIII
Livers and Knox with back-to-back 3s. Knox almost sat Siakam down with that jab step.
Pistons lead by 10 with 3:02 left. – 7:02 PM
Monte Poole @MontePooleNBCS
Among things to consider in the context of Warriors trade chatter:
Andrew Wiggins is under contract thru 2026, with PO in 2026-27. Stays below $30M annually until 26-27
Pascal Siakam, expiring at $38M this season, becomes UFA in 6 months – 6:15 PM
Josh Lewenberg @JLew1050
Dennis Schroder gets the start in Anunoby’s spot, so it’s Schroder-Trent-Barnes-Siakam-Poeltl. Remains to be seen what the starting unit will look like when Barrett and Quickley arrive but they’re not available tonight. Raptors have 10 players available vs Detroit. – 5:24 PM
Doug Smith @SmithRaps
Raptors starting Schroder, Trent, Barnes, Siakam, Poeltl; bench will be Boucher, McDaniels, Porter, Dick, Young – 5:23 PM

More on this storyline

None of this should confuse people about the Raptors’ being some sort of in-fighting soap opera of a team. Barnes declined to speak to the media after the game, visibly upset about the trade, even if it was done with his future in mind. Anunoby and Achiuwa were Barnes’ post-practice shooting partners, and this was the first big trade he has witnessed firsthand. “Yeah, it sucks,” Siakam said. “It’s not easy. And I think for some people, it is the first time. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it happen. So I understand. We got to be able to move on from it. That’s what it’s about.” -via The Athletic / December 31, 2023
In previous talks with the Atlanta Hawks surrounding Siakam, Jalen Johnson was a player Toronto coveted, league sources told HoopsHype. However, the Hawks would ideally like to retain the 22-year-old forward amid his breakout campaign averaging 14 points on 58 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent from downtown with 7.8 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game. -via HoopsHype / December 30, 2023
