The visual display of Nio’s system reminds us of the Bose-developed electromagnetic suspension from the 1980s. It could also change depending on the road surface, keeping the car noticeably flat through the corners. Bose built a few Lexus LS400s with its invention and filmed some tests you can watch below. The system was deemed too heavy, so it never went into production. Bose eventually sold the right to this system to ClearMotion, but nothing has happened since.
Nio’s system is obviously way more advanced, as everything is by wire. Like the Tesla Cybertruck, the ET9 will also have a steer-by-wire system programmed to work with the chassis. And thanks to that new chip, both systems can work faster than the average human brain can send a signal from the butt to the brain.
Nio is not a new player in China. It made headlines in 2017 after the Nio EP9 set the Nurburgring lap record for a ‘production car’, just three months after the Lamborghini Huracan took it from the Porsche 918. In more recent years, Nio became famous for its battery-swapping technology, which is an interesting solution to range anxiety.
