A WOMAN has told how she returned from vacation to find her house in rubble as construction workers destroyed it by mistake.

Susan Hodgson’s vacation turned sour when she received a call from the neighbour asking if she had sent someone to tear down her longtime family property.

“I said, ‘No’ and she said, ‘Well, there’s someone over here who just demolished the whole house and tore it all down,’” Hodgson told the AP.

The bizarre incident took place in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.

She also said that the workers have acted “nasty” when confronted by the neighbour.

“He told her to shut up and mind her own business,” Hodgson said.

The distressed homeowner had to send a family member to the scene to talk to the crew and request their permit.

Hodgson said: “The guy pulled it out and said ‘Oh I’m at the wrong address’ and he just packs everything up and leaves and the house is just (destroyed) down and gone.”

Hodgson’s family house has been unoccupied and boarded up for 15 years. But the owner keeps on top of tax payments, cutting grass and keeping the exterior of the house clean.

The demolishing company “You Call It, We Haul It” has not reached out to the owner about the misunderstanding.

Hodgson is appalled at the lack of accountability from the company.

She said: “It’s just hard to believe someone thinks they have the right to just come and tear something up and walk away from it and didn’t come back and say, ‘I’m sorry. What do I need to do to fix this? It was an accident.’ They didn’t give me nothing.”

“You Call It, We Haul It”  shared a statement saying they’re investigating and “are working on resolving the mishap”.

The house is still covered with rubbles from the demolition and is a “grumbled mess”.

The whole house is tumbled in and a big ole mess. He didn’t haul nothing off,” Hodgson said.

The homeowner is furious and looking to file a police report and speak with the lawyers.

She is also worried about any water or gas lines that could have been ruptured in the process.

Hodgson added: “I keep waking up thinking, ‘Is this all a joke or something?’ I’m just in shock.”
