Cops have confirmed she was an 83-year-old British national, but she is yet to be named.

Officials said today she died at Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in the island capital Arrecife.

The tragic accident happened just after 9am on Wednesday and she is thought to have died later that day.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency coordination centre said before it emerged the British woman had died: “A woman run over by a bus in Lanzarote has been taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital with serious multiple injuries.

“The first alert was received at 9.08am on Wednesday, saying a traffic accident had occurred in the municipality of Teguise and a person had been injured.”

It was not clear this morning whether the British tourist was on her own or being accompanied by family or friends when she was hit.

Local reports said some witnesses had told investigators the driver of the bus, owned by a private firm but providing a public transportation service, had been travelling “too fast” but there has been no official confirmation of this claim or about the exact circumstances of the accident.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by police employed by Teguise Town Hall, who will submit a report to an investigating magistrate.

The bus driver, who has not been arrested, will be questioned as part of the probe.

His vehicle is also expected to be examined to rule out any possible mechanical faults.
