A SPEEDING car has smashed into a large crowd of people leaving 17 injured including three children in Poland.

The driver ploughed into the group before fleeing the scene and continuing to cause chaos through his life-threatening driving, say reports.

Two of those hit in the horror crash in Szczecin, Poland are in a critical condition, according to Poland-24.com

As at least seven are thought to be in hospital.

Polish media claims the person behind the wheel veered off the road at around 3pm at high speeds before smashing into the crowd who were on a pedestrian crossing.

The driver has been identified as a 33-year-old man and is thought to have been finally stopped by the public after he rammed into the bystanders.

Pictures show parked cars left battered and beaten by the side of the road after the erratic driver ploughed into them leaving them crumpled into each other.

Before he reportedly went on to hit several more motors before crashing into a bus stop in front of horrified witnesses.

The 33-year-old was then apparently detained by shocked onlookers and handed over to the police, according to local media.

Chilling pictures of the busy Polish street shows several injured people laying stricken on the ground by the Plac Rodła Więcej tram stop.

With people rushing to their side to help them before several ambulances quickly arrived on the scene.

Provincial governor Adam Rudawski told reporters: “We have an incident here with currently 17 people injured, including three minors and two in critical condition.

“The person who caused the accident has been detained.”

As police spokesman for the area Pawel Pankau added: “This was not a terrorist act.”

Cops are now investigating the terrifying situation.
