The terrifying footage shows the infuriated locals wail as they pulled the woman out of the police vehicle and teared her clothes.

Andrea, a resident, told AP: “We are fed up. This time it was an eight-year-old girl.

“This is the result of the bad government we have.

“This isn’t the first time this kind of thing has happened, but this is the first time the people have done something.”

Violent backlash began after a body of Camila Gomez was found on a side of a road near a tourist town of Taxco.

The girl went missing after going to a neighbour’s house to play on Wednesday.

Her mother raised the alarm when she received ransom messages from the kidnappers.

Camila’s mum said she showed the cops neighbour’s security footage of the house where her daughter was held but they ignored her pleas to act.

Surveillance video showed a woman assisting a man who carried a bundle – believed to be Camila’s body – into the trunk of a taxi.

Authorities later confirmed they were investigating two men and a woman for aggravated homicide.

When police failed to arrest the suspects, citizens took matters into their own hands.

The vigilantes forced the trio out of their house, prompting the cops to get involved.

But the furious residents overturned cars, blocked the road and surrounded the police car.

When the enraged crowd hauled the woman away from cops, the officers gave up and stood by as she was brutally attacked.

The woman was later hospitalised but ultimately died from her injuries.

The two male suspects also received the vigilante’s punishment but survived.

The prosecution is treating the woman’s death as a case of a qualified homicide, AFP news agency reported.

The prosecutor’s office also confirmed an arrest of one man in connection with the murder of Camila Gomez.

On Friday, mourners have gathered to bid farewell to Camila as they carried her coffin through the city centre.

The public prosecution at the hands of the people came amid holy celebrations which attracts many tourists.

Felipa Lagunas, a local elementary school teacher, said: “I never thought that in a touristic place like Taxco we would experience a lynching.

“I saw it as something distant, in places far from civilization … I never imagined that my community would experience this on such a special day.”

Guerrero, the region where Taxco is located, has been plagued by violence and organised crime.

Some 40 cartels control the area instilling fear and killing anyone who doesn’t comply with their rules.

Lynching ins’t uncommon in Mexico as experts attribute it to the pervasive sense of impunity in the nation plagued by crime.

Andrea said: “We know the town lives off of Holy Week (tourism) and that this is going to mess it up.

“There will be a lot of people who won’t want to come anymore.

“We make our living off tourism, but we cannot continue to allow them to do these things to us.”
