Elon Musk is an influential personality who always stays in the media limelight because of his inventions and controversies. On Tuesday, he dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Greg Brockman in California state court. This brings an end to the long-lasting legal battle between the co-founders of the artificial intelligence startup.
Notably, the 52-year-old billionaire co-founded OpenAI in 2015. It sued the company in February for a breach of commitment. Initially, the company’s mission was completely nonprofit and aimed to benefit society. However, it abandoned the idea when it collaborated with private customers for their own benefit.
He stated in the filing, “To this day, OpenAI, Inc.’s website continues to profess that its charter is to ensure that AGI ‘benefits all of humanity. In reality, however, OpenAI, Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world: Microsoft.”
“Under its new Board, it is not just developing but is actually refining an AGI to maximize profits for Microsoft, rather than for the benefit of humanity,” the suit added.
The lawsuit filed by Musk sought a jury trial and for OpenAI, Altman, and Brockman to pay back any profit they have received till now. In response to the suit, OpenAI had called Musk’s claims “incoherent” and “frivolous.” The company also argued for the case to be dismissed.
Not only this, but it also published a blog post showcasing Elon Musk’s emails from his time at OpenAI. It became clear to everyone that Musk has previously acknowledged the need for OpenAI to make millions of dollars in order to elevate its artificial intelligence features. This contradicted his accusations that the company was wrongly pursuing profit.
The move to drop the suit came just a day after Musk openly criticized OpenAI for mishandling user data. This was after Apple announced a partnership with ChatGPT to integrate with its digital personal assistant, Siri, for users on an opt-in basis.
