Dozens of flights have been severely delayed at Bristol Airport after a serious car crash on the nearby A38.

The airport announced that no flights would take off before 8am on Saturday morning, causing havoc to the departure schedule.

Passengers leaving and arriving at Bristol have been impacted by the incident with a minimum of two-hour delays expected on most flights.

Early morning is typically the busiest time of day on the runway and the knock-on effects are likely to be felt throughout Saturday.

The crash happened between two roundabouts which both serve as entry points to the airport and the road was shut while emergency services worked at the scene.

Two vehicles collided in the early hours and police urged drivers to avoid the area.

It was the second serious crash near the airport in the space of just 10 hours after the A38 was closed on Friday afternoon just north of the main entrance.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: ‘We are advising motorists to avoid the A38 near Bristol Airport this morning (Saturday 28 October) following a two-vehicle collision.

‘The road is currently closed between the two airport roundabouts. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.’

The closure affected passengers coming out of the airport who had landed on late night arrival flights.
