Saviors of summer touring, Green Day are promising to bring the heat (or at least add to it) with concerts that celebrate two big anniversaries — their 1994 breakout album, Dookie, and Grammy-winning 2004 album, American Idiot — alongside songs from their upcoming 14th album, Saviors. They’re previewing that record, out Jan 19, with a new video for “Look Ma, No Brains!” The opening acts on the tour certainly seem like no-brainers, with the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas set to take the same stadium stages as the trio.
“We’ve never been more excited to unleash new music than with Saviors, a record that’s meant to be rocked live, together,” the band collectively said in a statement. “So let’s thrash. We’ve got some amazing friends who are coming along for the ride!”
The two-minute clip, which contains a warning for flashing images, shows the band in black and white performing for an audience of a nurse and a catatonic-looking patient getting shock treatment. There’s a Wizard of Oz twist at the end.
The North American leg of the trek, officially The Saviors Tour, kicks off July 29 in Washington, D.C., and will run through Sept. 28 with a gig in San Diego, a few hundred miles south from where they formed. Tickets go on sale next week, with presales beginning Tuesday and a general on-sale starting at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10 on the band’s website.
A couple of weeks back, Green Day played Dookie — which they recently re-released as an expanded box set —in its entirety for an 850-person–capacity crowd at Las Vegas’ Fremont Country Club. “For a band to be able to keep the rambunctious crowd without the help of mainstream songs shows why Green Day still sits at the top of the pop-punk pyramid,” Rolling Stone reported. “After a breakneck 29-song set, Green Day capped off the evening with ‘Revolution Radio’ and cult classic ‘Homecoming.’” The gig, which included the first live performance of the Saviors track “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” was where frontman Billie Joe Armstrong also announced the tour.
