Approximately 2.2 million Toyota RAV4 crossovers are being recalled in North America due to fire risk. Out of that number, 1.85 million units are found in the US, while 306,000 vehicles in Canada and Mexico are part of the problematic bunch, Toyota spokesperson Josh Burns told Automotive News.

According to Toyota, the problem comes from the RAV4’s 12-volt battery. While the stock batteries from the factory won’t have any issues, a smaller replacement, which could happen due to the smaller top dimensions of the clamp, could cause issues. The discrepancy could cause the hold-down clamp to be tightened incorrectly, leading to the movement in the battery tray when the vehicle makes forceful turns. When this happens, there’s a risk of a short circuit when the positive terminal comes in contact with the hold-down clamp, presenting a fire risk.
