Sheryl Crow opened the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an appropriate bang. Olivia Rodrigo, a Billboard Hot 100-topping artist who is leading a new generation of rockers, joined the newly minted Rock Hall member for an all-smiles duet on “If It Makes You Happy,” which wrapped with a hug.
After a speech from her pal Laura Dern, Crow was back on the guitar for a one-two punch of two more hits. Alongside fellow Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks – who hailed Crow as “everything every girl should want to be” – Crow sang “Strong Enough,” blending voices with the Fleetwood Mac legend. After that, Peter Frampton, whom Crow described as “one of my heroes,” joined Crow and Nicks for “Everyday Is a Winding Road.”
In a video montage about Crow’s career that featured Nicks, Maren Morris and Rodrigo, the “Vampire” singer hailed Crow’s lyricism, honing in on the lyric “scrape the mold off the bread and serve you French toast again” from “If It Makes You Happy.”
“Nobody could say that besides Sheryl. She says things I would have never thought of in the most beautiful way,” Rodrigo said. The love is mutual, with Crow hailing Rodrigo as “the real deal” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon the night before.
After her onstage moment with Crow, Rodrigo described the experience in a statement to Billboard. “It was an honor to join Sheryl on stage and I am so excited for her to be inducted into the RRHOF! I am a massive fan of hers and her incredible songwriting. She’s equally as kind as she is talented and I feel so lucky that I was able to be part of celebrating such a legend.”
Earlier this year, Crow told Billboard where she was when she got the good news. “I was at my kid’s baseball game, keeping it real, trying not to scream at the entire ballpark, ‘I’m in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!’ I’m just trying to stay regular mom and not have my head blow up.” Crow thanked both of her sons during her acceptance speech, and added what an additional honor it was to be inducted alongside her personal hero Willie Nelson.
