A train crash in Wales has killed one and left 15 other hospitalised after two trains crashed into each other on a remote railway line.

All lines have been closed between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth due to the “operational incident” on the Cambrian line just outside Llanbrynmair.

British Transport Police were called to the line at 7.29pm to reports of a low-speed train collision. Paramedics, fire and rescue, Dyfed Powys Police, and coastguard helicopters were all at the scene.

Network Rail said in its statement: “Emergency services are responding to an incident near Llanbrynmair in Powys, Mid Wales, involving two trains – 18.31 Transport for Wales service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19.09 Transport for Wales service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. The line is closed as they carry out their work.”

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed the death of one man whose identity has not been revealed, and the hospitalisation of a further 15 people with non-life-threatening or changing injuries.

BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan said: “We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening’s incident.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted and specialist officers continue to provide support.”

The police are no longer at the scene as of Tuesday morning as all passengers have been evacuated from both trains and taken home on rail replacement buses.

However, they have asked motorists to avoid the A470, from Carno to Commins Coch, which is currently closed. Drivers have been asked to find alternate routes.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales added: “Due to a operational incident in the Talerddig area, services will experience severe disruption. Emergency services and Network Rail are on site.

“Services between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth will be cancelled until further notice, rail replacement in operation. Due to road closures we are unable to call at Caersws station until further notice.

“Services between Machynlleth and Pwllheli will run as normal. Please note rail replacement may experience delays and disruption due to emergency services on the main road.”

The First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan, said her “thoughts are with those involved” in the crash.

She said in a statement on X: “My thoughts are with all those involved in the rail incident in Powys earlier this evening. I would like to thank the emergency services for their response and have asked to be kept informed of any developments throughout the night.”
