Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown Has A Phobia That Makes Her Fearful Acting Real When Encountering Vecna

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown explains why she is genuinely scared while filming Eleven’s scenes with Vecna. Jamie Campbell Bower made his series debut as the monstrous Vecna in season 4 of the hit Netflix series. This included his childhood, when he was known as Henry Creel, and his history at Hawkins Laboratory, where he was the first test subject of Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) and got to know Eleven. Season 4 established Vecna as the show’s overarching villain that Eleven and her allies will have to defeat in Stranger Things season 5.

During a Stranger Things Epic Con panel (via People), Brown revealed she is fearful of masks, which makes her genuinely afraid in her scenes with Vecna. She shared that crew members have told her to “calm down” and to try to find details that remind her of Bower when filming with him. When asked about her favorite scene that she has filmed with Bower, Brown jokingly responded “none of them” due to her fear of what he looks like as Vecna. Check out Brown’s other comments below:

He terrifies me when he is Vecna. I am terrified of his costume. It scares me. I don’t like masks, which is crazy because I am at Comic Con. But I don’t like people covering their faces. It’s definitely a phobia. I’ve had it since I was little.

He comes on to [the] set and I am like, “Who is that?” And they are like, “It’s Jamie” and I’m like, “That’s not Jamie. That is a gremlin that lives in my closet and is waiting for me to fall asleep to kill me.”

I’m like, sobbing in my tent and I’m like nothing reminds me of Jamie. It was horrible, and then I close my eyes, and I smelled on his breath cigarettes. I’m like that’s Jamie.

Any scene that I have to pretend to be scared, he knows it’s real fear. Yes, Jamie is the best. I love working with him — but not other him.

Eleven And Vecna’s Scenes Will Be One Of The Best Parts Of Season 5

Brown’s phobia of masks adds another layer to her scenes with Vecna, as it is not only Eleven who is sometimes frightened of him, but also Brown. Between her acting and genuine fear, Eleven’s reactions to Vecna are poised to be equally convincing and entertaining in season 5. In terms of what these behind-the-scenes details mean for the story, Brown’s comments suggest that Eleven and Vecna will share numerous scenes together in season 5, which is not surprising, but nevertheless promising to hear.

While Eleven and Vecna share vital history together, they did not share as many scenes together as other characters did in season 4. That will change after the Stranger Things season 4 ending, which brought Eleven back to Hawkins, where the town is now more connected with the Upside Down than ever before. Before Eleven and her friends presumably defeat Vecna, it sounds like she will have plenty of moments in which she is fearful of what the villain has done or is fearful of what he plans to do.

I was already excited about the Eleven and Vecna scenes in season 5, but that excitement has now been further heightened by Brown’s comments. Eleven’s fear of Vecna adds to the formidable and terrifying threat that he poses, and I look forward to seeing how his villainy can be escalated even more in season 5. This will also make it all the more satisfying when Eleven and other Stranger Things characters successfully work together to stop Vecna in the show’s final season.
