A 10-year-old girl has died after being mauled by her family’s dog.

The attack took place inside the youngster’s home in the Malton area of North Yorkshire just after 4pm on Friday.

Neighbours rushed inside to help the girl while a relative locked the dog inside a car.

But despite paramedics trying their best to help her, she died at the scene having suffered serious injuries.

The dog has been seized and remains in secure kennels.

Police have not yet confirmed whether it is a banned breed.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the girl’s family and friends at this very distressing time. Officers are supporting the family while enquiries continue.

‘We also urge people not to speculate about the incident, respect the family’s privacy and allow them to grieve in peace.

‘We will provide more information when we are able to.’
