A furious mother has claimed her daughter was punished for wearing a Remembrance Poppy to school.
The parent’s daughter had reportedly gone to school on Armistice Day, November 11, wearing a British Legion poppy to commemorate and honour those who served and sacrificed in the war.
However, during the school day the mum received a shocking text from her child that she had received a detention for wearing a poppy pin. Her daughter’s name was reportedly written on the board and had to stay after lessons.
Taking to TikTok the mum said: “The pin in question is a poppy pin, it’s not just any poppy pin, it’s the actual British Legion poppies that are being sold everywhere.
“The school have given her a detention for wearing a poppy pin, think about that for a minute.”
The mum said in her viral video that has amassed half a million views that she was hoping for a meeting with the headteacher.
She added that if the meeting failed to take place then she has “already spoken to people in the British Legion, they are ready to make a stand, ex-armed forces are ready to make a stand”.
In an update on Wednesday the mother once again took to TikTok where she explained that she had received a call from the assistant head who questioned whether her daughter’s poppy was a “flamboyant one” or a “different colour”.
The mum said: “The assistant head called me yesterday and said there’s no detention set.
“I said ‘well there was, her name was on board, she had to stay after lessons, she therefore would have had a detention.
“Whether someone has overrided that and tried to shove it under the carpet I don’t know.
“The fact of the matter is, it was still said. She was not allowed to wear that pin. That angers me in itself. I said regardless if it was red, rainbow, purple, big and proud. Whatever. She is remembering those people that fought for our country and shouldn’t be punished for wearing a pin of any description.”
The mother who did not name the school said the issue is still being investigated. She went on to clear any speculation that her daughter was wearing a “big” poppy adding that her daughter donned a small Royal British Legion pin badge.
The mum said she was “saddened” to hear of other parents telling her their children were also banned from wearing poppies as the “pins could be used to stab people and cause harm”.
And in another instance, pupils were allegedly told that they couldn’t wear poppies because it “might offend someone”.
The mother concluded: “Those people fought for our country to ensure we could have a free country, and sadly we are going to end up forgetting these people because there’s too much health and safety and what if we offend someone now?”.
Both TikTok‘s have amassed thousands of comments with angry viewers rushing to comment on the “shocking incident”.
“I’m a veteran of 23 years and I find it unbelievable. I just can’t get my head round the fact that a British child cannot wear a poppy to school”, said one user.
Another added: “The school should be ashamed of themselves. They are totally disrespecting those that laid down their lives for this country.”
“We used to buy poppies at school, What has the world come to. I would not allow her to do one minute of detention”, another user said.
