Warning! This article contains spoilers for Silo season 2, episode 1.Silo season 2’s episode 1 marks the inception of a new journey for Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette and introduces a new mysterious character in its ending moments. Throughout its runtime, Silo season 2’s opening episode goes back and forth between timelines. The past timelines either focus on the history of a silo located next to Juliette’s Silo 18 or on Juliette’s childhood. Meanwhile, the present timeline highlights how Juliette enters a new seemingly abandoned silo and explores its depths to find more about the world she lives in.

Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette puts her resourcefulness on full display in the episode as she constructs make-shift bridges using ropes and other spare parts in the abandoned silo. She faces many setbacks but stands tall in the face of adversity and danger. However, towards the end of the inaugural episode of Apple TV+’s Silo season 2, she seemingly faces her biggest challenge when she finds a man in the abandoned silo. The mysterious man only shows half of his face through a door’s peephole and strangely warns Juliette that he will kill her if she tries to open the door again.

Who The Man Is In Silo Season 2 Episode 1’s Ending

The Man Is The Last Survivor Of The Neighboring Silo

Although Silo season 2’s episode 1 ends with a cliffhanger that does not reveal the man’s identity, it hints at who he is in one of its initial flashbacks. In an early scene, a young boy named Timmy delivers a message to his father from the engineering department of his silo. After reading the message, the father, who dons the Sheriff’s badge, asks one of his men to take Timmy to safety. In the events that follow, two factions in the silo wage a war against one another. The faction, led by the Sheriff, ultimately wins and heads to the outside world to seek freedom.

Before finally reaching a well-rounded closure, Juliette’s story goes through many ups and downs, highs and lows in Hugh Howey’s original Silo books.

However, as the show’s present timeline suggests, all the citizens of the silo who went outside perished after coming in contact with the toxins in the atmosphere. The man Juliette finds in the underground bunker seems to be the only person who managed to survive while everyone else in the silo passed away. Given how the Silo episode seems to focus a little too much on Timmy, the survivor could also be the grown-up version of him. However, since Timmy, too, heads outside with everyone in the flashback, it is hard not to wonder how he managed to survive.

Although
Silo
season 2’s episode 1 only reveals the mysterious man’s eyes, one can clearly see that Steven Zahn is playing him.

Before Silo season 2’s release, Steve Zahn was confirmed as a new addition to the show’s roster. It was revealed that he would play a character named Solo, who is the sole survivor of an uprising in Silo 17. Although Silo season 2’s episode 1 only reveals the mysterious man’s eyes, one can clearly see that Steven Zahn is playing him. This confirms that the man behind the door is Solo from Hugh Howey’s first Silo book, Wool.

Why The Man Threatens To Kill Juliette In Silo Season 2 Episode 1’s Ending

He Seems To Struggle To Trust Her And Her Motives

The mysterious man, Solo, has likely lived alone in the Silo for years, if not decades, since the rebellion killed everyone else. Owing to this, he must be cautious about trusting Juliette and her motives. Since the people of his Silo headed outside before dying, they likely knew something about the outside world the citizens of Silo 18 did not. Owing to this, Solo also probably knows a lot more about other silos and the authorities who run them than Juliette. He grows paranoid about Juliette’s arrival because he is unsure whether she is an ally or an enemy sent there to silence him.

There are three books in Hugh Howey’s
Silo
series:
Wool
,
Shift
, and
Dust
.

Solo could also be protecting something or someone. He is, perhaps, not the only survivor and has the responsibility of protecting others. Therefore, he threatens to kill Juliette if she attempts to open the door because he is unsure whether her arrival would benefit him and other survivors or put their lives in danger.

What Happened To Juliette’s Suit In Silo Season 2 Episode 1

The Suit Ran Out Of Oxygen

Moments after Juliette enters a neighboring Silo, she notices she is struggling to breathe. In a desperate effort to restore her breathing, she uses a wrench to smash her helmet. As soon as she removes her helmet, she is finally able to breathe again. This scene suggests that she only had a limited supply of oxygen in her pressurized suit. She survived outside because her suit was adequately pressurized and sealed with heat tape that ensured she got an adequate supply of oxygen without coming in contact with the toxic air in the atmosphere.

However, when she started running out of oxygen, and even her heat tape started giving away, Juliette faced a dire choice in Silo season 2’s episode: she could either break her helmet and risk breathing in toxins or die from suffocation. For obvious reasons, she chose the latter. Fortunately, the new silo she entered had clean air, allowing her to survive even without the suit.

What Happened To The Citizens Of The New Silo In Silo Season 2

They Lost Their Lives After A Rebellion

As the opening flashback in Silo season 2’s episode 1 suggests, a rebellion ensued in the new Silo decades before Juliette entered it. During the rebellion, the Silo’s citizens were divided into two factions: the freedom fighters and the conformers. While the freedom seekers wanted to open the Silo’s gates because they were convinced they were lied to about the outside world, the conformers refused to break the rules enforced on them by higher authorities. Ultimately, the freedom fighters, led by the Silo’s Sheriff, emerged victorious.

Before the Sheriff leads his supporters out of the Silo, he questions whether they are right about the outside world being habitable for humans. He then dismisses his concerns by claiming that they are dead anyway, seemingly reflecting how oppressed and trapped they have felt after being trapped in the Silo all their lives. Unfortunately, as the flashback’s aftermath reveals, all the freedom fighters died after stepping out and breathing in the toxins in the air.

Her Dream Highlights The Loneliness Felt By People In The Silo

In another flashback in Silo season 2’s episode 1, Martha Walker describes one of her dreams to young Juliette. She tells her that she dreamed about being left behind in the Silo and even walked out of her door to call out for others. She only realized she was dreaming when one of her neighbors asked her to shut up. Silo season 1 established that Martha has had a fear of leaving her workshop for quite some time. Her dream and lifestyle seem to reflect a deep inner conflict between her desire to seek freedom and her inability to break free from the rules imposed on her.
