Famous bridge leaves Twitter and immediately gets hate spammed

Clifton Suspension Bridge has shut down its X account, previously known as Twitter, due to an “increase in inappropriate content”, sparking a wave of humorous memes. The account, which provided updates about the iconic Bristol bridge, announced earlier this week that it would no longer be posting on its feed.

Despite being a “fantastic platform for engagement” with its audience over the past 15 years, recent changes have led staff to reconsider their use of the site. The platform was known as Twitter until 2022 when it was purchased by billionaire and current US government official Elon Musk.

Clifton Suspension Bridge had approximately 10,000 followers on X, and its final post has been viewed over a million times, receiving around 2,000 responses. However, other recent posts have not seen similar levels of interaction, reports Gloucestershire Live. 

The decision to leave the site, attributed to a “decline in meaningful engagement”, has been met with a significant amount of negative and mocking responses. Despite the announcement being made on November 11, most comments have been posted in the last 24 hours by individuals with a blue checkmark on their account – those who have subscribed to X’s paid model.

The suspension bridge is not the only account to cease posting on the social media site. Yesterday, The Guardian also announced its departure from the website, stating that the platform’s benefits were being overshadowed by the negatives and “often disturbing content”.

Clifton Suspension Bridge has decided to call it quits on a certain social media platform, with the official account stating: “With the rise in inappropriate content and decrease in meaningful engagement with our followers, we have chosen to no longer post to this account.”

Moreover, they assured fans, “You will always be able to stay up to date with what is happening at the Clifton Suspension Bridge, including bridge closures and maintenance through our website cliftonbridge.org.uk.”

They also extended an invitation for followers to join them on other social networks: “If you’d like to continue following us on different social media platforms, we are active on Facebook and Instagram using @brunelbridge.”
