The updated moderate overlap test was formulated as the IIHS found a higher risk of fatal injury for adults sitting in the second row due to the lack of airbags otherwise found at the front. However, the organization did point out that the second row remains the safest place to be for smaller children as front airbags can still pose a risk of injury.
As part of the updated test, a second crash test dummy was placed inside the vehicle behind the driver, roughly the size of a small woman or a 12-year-old child. The data that the crash test dummy collected was compared against the new metrics of the IIHS that focused on any excessive risk of injury to the head, neck, chest, or thighs of the occupant.
For a car to score well with the new guidelines, the dummy should remain correctly seated without “submarining” during the crash or sliding beneath the lap belt, increasing the risk of injuries. Aside from this, during the crash, the head of the test dummy must remain at a safe distance from other interior parts of the car.
