Met Office gives verdict on if UK will see snow next week

After temperatures dropped this week, the Met Office has given its verdict on whether Brits can expect snow next week.

Parts of the UK have been battered by extreme weather this week after Storm Bert and then Storm Conall brought heavy rain and flooding.

South Wales and Northampton were particularly effected, with two people found dead in the flooding.

And the bad weather has only continued later this week, with the Met Office earlier today issuing a yellow weather warning for fog.

The fog, along with freezing cold conditions, led to poor visibility and temperatures plunging below freezing as drivers were warned of dangerous conditions.

In what has been a torrid week weather-wise, temperatures in certain parts of the country also reached as low as -9° last night.

Those ice-cold temperatures were recorded in Scotland, with the north of England, as expected, suffering colder weather than the south.

But plummeting temperatures have caused Brits to wonder whether we could be in store for more snow over the coming weeks, and the Met Office has given its verdict.

Will it snow next week in the UK?

The Met Office told Metro.co.uk: ‘Some more unsettled weather is possible at times next week.

‘If this occurs, it is most likely to affect the north and north-west of the UK. However, at this stage temperatures next week and into next weekend look most likely to be near normal or slightly above, although there is a chance we could see some temporary colder interludes at times.

‘While any drop in temperature often leads to speculation of a heightened risk of snow, as little as 1 degree Celsius change in temperature can make all the difference between snow and rainfall.

‘Therefore, it is far too early to be talking about any risk of snow for next week and of course Christmas.’

As we head towards Christmas, many will of course be ‘dreaming of a white Christmas’ – with the Met saying that there is a chance of snow.

Their website notes: ‘Towards mid-December, there are signs that the weather will become less settled again, with west or northwesterly types preferred.

‘These will bring some wetter and windier spells with a risk of snow, especially across northern hills.

‘These conditions may prevail into December, although drier, more settled spells may also affect the UK at times, again these probably more likely towards the south.’

As we head into this weekend, cloud and rain is set to continue in the north, while southerners could actually be set for some sunny spells.
