Homeowners have reacted angrily to a neighbour’s bungalow loft conversion – arguing it has “robbed them of privacy”.

Residents in Wiltshire claim Harriet and Aaron Baines’ new development “towers over” their homes, with some claims that they have doubled the size of their house.

Speaking yesterday (October 19) at their home, the couple did not want to comment on the row, although they did say ahead of the build: “We apologise in advance for any temporary inconveniences this project may cause and appreciate your understanding and support.”

Despite the warning, it seems as if the couple do not have the right to build the loft conversion.

They thought they had ‘permitted development rights’, but were last month informed by Wiltshire Council that these rights do not cover “major construction rights” such as the loft conversion.

Raymond Hazel was quick to call the development “overbearing and obtrusive”, adding “it also appears the neighbours have no consideration for their neighbours’ privacy”.

Another couple, Derek and Lesley Peters, say their much-loved activity of sitting and watching the pond is now overlooked by the new loft conversion.

Mrs Baines initially told Wiltshire Council she thought the work was “under permitted development”, but was informed by a council officer on September 20.

The development now needs permission, and residents are invited to comment on the plans before Thursday, October 26.

Wiltshire Council hopes to make a decision by November 23.
