CENTRAL ISLIP, New York — Republican Congressman George Santos is scheduled to be arraigned on new charges Friday morning.
Prosecutors hit Santos with new charges he stole people’s identities, made purchases on the credit cards of his donors and lied to the House of Representatives. He is expected to plead not guilty, as he did to the prior charges he faces. Arraignment is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday.
The new charges complicate the conditions of Santos’ release on bail since, among other things, he was ordered not to have any contact with individuals associated with his case. The new charges include allegations the Congressman stole the identities of family members to enrich his campaign coffers.
“Because some of these individuals are family members of the defendant, defense counsel has requested that the defendant be permitted to contact certain of these individuals. Defense counsel agrees that the defendant will continue to be prohibited from communicating with these individuals about this case, the pending charges against him, the facts underlying the pending charges and any future court proceedings, trial or testimony in this matter,” the filing said.
Ahead of Santos’ arraignment, GOP Rep. Anthony D’Esposito introduced a privileged resolution to expel indicted George Santos from Congress Thursday evening.
Other NY Republicans including Rep. Molinaro, LaLota and Lawler were sitting behind D’Esposito in the chamber when he spoke on the floor. Majority Whip Tom Emmer was there as well.
D’Esposito spoke on the House floor and said George Santos is not “fit to serve his constituents as a United States representative.”
The House now has two legislative days to take up on the resolution. It would also require two-thirds to pass. The House is out of session until next Wednesday night.
It is not clear how new Speaker Mike Johnson will handle this resolution. Speaker McCarthy referred the last Santos expulsion resolution to the House Ethics Committee.
Santos should stand trial in May or June of next year on fraud and campaign finance charges, federal prosecutors in Central Islip, New York said Thursday.
