Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced their separation in August, but a divorce petition filed by the former spouse of an Ottawa surgeon suggests their relationship may have ended months earlier. The divorce papers filed by Ana Remonda in April state that her husband, Dr. Marcos Bettolli, had “re-partnered” with an unnamed “high-profile individual,” and reporting by Glen McGregor has identified that individual as Grégoire Trudeau.

In those intervening months, Grégoire Trudeau continued to perform duties on behalf of Canada, attending several public events with the prime minister. It is not known when Grégoire Trudeau and Bettolli began their relationship, but in the divorce petition filed April 26, his ex-wife alleges that they had previously discussed his new “high-profile” relationship and her desire for the children not to interact with his new partner. Remonda alleges the children have since met his new partner and this has caused them “discomfort and anxiety” and exposed them to unspecified security concerns. Given that the relationship was serious enough in April for Grégoire Trudeau to have met Bettolli’s children, it is plausible that they may have already been seeing each other when U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited Canada one month earlier.
On the first day of the trip, the Trudeau family hosted the Bidens at their home, Rideau Cottage, in Ottawa. It was Biden’s first visit to Canada as president, and Grégoire Trudeau played an integral part in the visit, appearing alongside the prime minister in multiple photos and taking the First Lady on a tour that included a curling rink and the National Gallery of Canada. During the trip, Trudeau and Biden gave a speech to Parliament, with their spouses in attendance. The Trudeaus also hosted a dinner to honour Biden, where the prime minister delivered a speech.

During the visit, Grégoire Trudeau recorded an interview with Biden and YouTube home renovation experts The Sorry Girls. In it, Grégoire Trudeau discussed what it’s like to live in an historic, publicly owned building like Rideau Cottage. “The container, as you say, is historical. But the content is human. It’s us, and it’s a family. So, sometimes when people say, you know, ‘It’s so unique.’ Yes, of course, but we’re just a family and we’re just trying to live our lives,” she said. “So we have our struggles and we have our battles. I always remember that when tough times do come, that we keep a sense of safety in the house, from all fronts, and that our kids, whatever room we find ourselves in, there’s actual space to discuss real things.”

Grégoire Trudeau announced her upcoming book Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other on a photo of her in a meadow. The caption began “Life is far from always being green grass and sunshine, but this morning I’ve got some exciting news to share.” The book gave her a chance to “collaborate with amazing partners and experts to learn more about my favourite universal topic: why we think, feel and act the way we do as human beings,” she wrote. A press release for the book highlights Grégoire Trudeau’s role as wife of the prime minister: “Sophie shares moments from her own journey: from her childhood, through her struggles with an eating disorder in her teens and early adulthood; from a career as a speaker and television host to de facto ‘first lady’ and mother of three.”

The couple attend Canada Day celebrations at LeBreton Flats Park and Grégoire Trudeau posted photos from the event to Instagram with a long caption: “Life is tough. No doubt about it. Everyone has their troubles, no matter what your story is. Today, on Canada Day, I invite you to reflect on how your own life impacts others’. Our collective growth depends on our capacity for compassion, openness, and courage. It relies on the respect we show each other through our differences. Canada is us. We are the fabric of our country. So let’s build strong threads of connection between ourselves. Let’s lean into each other, listen deeply, remain curious, and always help the most vulnerable. Let’s lead by example and be honest. Let’s look at our wounds and help each other heal and grow. This is my Canada. This is our Canada. Happy Canada Day!” At the event, the Trudeaus posed for photos with bright smiles, shook hands with the crowd and Trudeau delivered a speech to the hundreds of attendees. Their children Hadrien and Ella-Grace were also present.
