Americans borrow readily. Buying products on credit is nowhere as common as in the United States. More than 100 million people have taken out a loan to buy a car. Credit cards are ubiquitous and are especially used during the holiday season. This year, US credit card debt exceeded $1 trillion for the first time, and there is no indication that the rapid growth has come to an end.
With interest rates rising as quickly as they are now – since April 2022, the Federal Reserve increased its policy rate by 5.25 percentage points and bond market yields followed suit – this has had an impact on the economy.
Despite all the pessimism, the American economy is far from a recession. Resounding figures were released on Thursday, showing that the economy grew by an annualized 4.9% in the past quarter.

The European Union has held a meeting to discuss creating a buffer for diesel and petrol and securing oil supplies. The meeting was convened by EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and considered potential risks in oil supplies in the event of an escalation in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
