A park visitor spotted “massive rats” some of which they said were the “size of a cat” scuttling around in broad daylight.

Journalist Simon Bird was visiting Gosforth Central Park in Newcastle on Monday, October 30, when he spotted several of the rodents scuttling across the paths. He said a number of older visitors were “startled” to see them.

The brazen critters appeared to be unstartled by people visiting the park, gathering in the middle of the pavement. Simon said some people almost had to step over the rats.

Taking to social media platform X, he said: “Massive rats are taking over Gosforth Central Park, Newcastle.

“Not even scared of people. Several old folk very startled today almost having to step over them.”

Simon went on to highlight the size of one particular rodent in a follow-up post. He added: “Size of this one! I’ve seen similar size cats!”

According to the RSPCA rats can be a common sight in parks and gardens across the United Kingdom. The charity says this is because they provide ample sources of food.

On its website, the RSPCA explains: “Rats or mice commonly live in gardens and parks in the UK; usually this is due to food sources, such as food put down for other animals.

“They can be attracted to spilt wild bird food, scattered by birds from feeders or tables. Compost heaps can also be a major attractant as they offer food, shelter and warmth.”
