A 16-year-old girl died from a blood clot on her brain after being put on oral contraception to ease period pain – her family have said.

Layla Khan, who began college this year, was three months into her course and hoping to attend Oxford University.

Things took a turn for the worse for Layla when she began suffering from agonising periods, and was advised to take a contraceptive pill by pals to ease her pain, according to her aunt.

She began to take the birth control on November 25, but by December 5, she started having headaches – and by the end of the week she began vomiting.

When her worried family contacted the 111 NHS helpline they were told there were ‘no red flags’ and they should just take her for a check-up the following morning.

Layla’s aunt Jenna Braithwaite said: ‘On the Sunday night, she was being sick, a lot.

‘She was basically vomiting every 30 minutes. So we got a GP appointment on the Monday morning.

‘Even though she was being sick the whole time she was at the GP’s, they gave her anti-sickness tablets and told her that they thought it was a stomach bug.’

The family were advised to take Layla to the hospital on Wednesday if the vomiting continued, but on Monday evening, she began screaming in pain in her bed.

Jenna said Layla told her the pain was ‘all over’, before collapsing in the bathroom.

Jenna and Layla’s mother had to carry her to the car, where Layla became increasingly unresponsive.

The contraceptive pill can have an array of side effects – some of them deadly.

Long-term effects include:

After a long delay in A&E, the hospital found a blood clot in Layla’s brain and rushed her to hospital in Hull, where she underwent an operation.

The next day, she was declared brain dead – leaving her family absolutely devastated.

Jenna said: ‘Words can’t even describe how devastated our family are. With it being so close to Christmas as well, it sucks all the Christmas spirit out of you.

‘We cannot understand why they said there were no red flags and then the day later she’s brain dead. It’s incomprehensible.

‘It’s just such a shock. She had only just started college and got a job. It’s just such a shock. We are absolutely devastated.’

The family decided to donate Layla’s organs for life-saving transplant operations – and were told they saved five lives just before Christmas.

The family has now started a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral costs for Layla.

Jenna’s daughter Alicia wrote on the fundraising page: ‘The family is absolutely devastated, and we would like to help raise as much as possible to help with funeral costs to give Layla the best send-off possible – like she deserves.

‘She was the oldest child and princess of the family, and she deserves the best because she was the best. Along with helping the family at this difficult time, especially this close to Christmas, every little helps.

‘She was beautiful and intelligent, loved and cherished by so many people, and had her whole life ahead of her.’
